BHC ENGAGES STAKEHOLDERS IN MAUN AND BOTETI

This week the Corporation took to the Northwest and Boteti District Councils to brief stakeholders on upcoming developments as part of its stakeholder engagement plan. The meetings were addressed by the Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer – Operations Mr. Batanani Nkhumisang.
 
The engagements are part of the Corporation’s long-standing tradition of consulting stakeholders on issues mutual interest. When addressing the Northwest District Council in Maun, the Deputy CEO – Operation informed them that the Corporation will soon commission a housing development comprising a mixture of low, medium and high-income houses to address shortage of accommodation in Matlapaneng. 
 
The project is currently at tender stage and plans are that construction will follow in the first quarter of the next financial year in April 2024. “The project will be unbundled into several work packages to encourage citizen participation” emphasized Nkhumisang adding that the Corporation awards tenders strictly to 100% citizen owned contractors as part of the Government’s effort to encourage citizen participation.
 
In response the Northwest District Councillors thanked BHC for taking time to provide an update on the planned development. They however, decried the delay in starting the development stating that it could have been long started and alleviated shortage of accommodation in Maun and the surrounding localities. 
 
While addressing councillors in Boteti District, the Deputy CEO – Operations shared that the Corporation in planning housing development in the next financial year in Letlhakane and Rakops villages. 
 
The District was recently elevated to a full district putting more pressure on demand for accommodation especially among civil servants. “We have already awarded tenders to construct 30 houses in Rakops to 14 citizen contractors who are all from Boteti District. 
 
This is mainly to spur economic activity in Boteti and impart knowledge and skills to the local construction labour market.” He said. Nkhumisang told the Councillors that the plan is to start the Letlhakane 72 housing development in the first quarter of the 2024 financial year once all the necessary requirements are met.
 
When responding to the presentation Councillors expressed their pleasure to the upcoming developments adding that this would address the dire shortage of accommodation among civil servants. Similarly, the Councillors lamented the delay by the Corporation in bringing housing developments to the district. 
 
The Deputy CEO – Operation later paid a courtesy call on the Rakops Tribal Authority and shared the good news regarding the upcoming developments, which are expected to bring the much needed employment to the locals. 
 
The Rakops 30 housing development is expected to start in the first quarter of the next financial year.
